Purest Form of Art – “Porn?”

It has long been a question, ” What is the line between art and pornography?”  I use to believe there was indeed a line between the two.  Erotic art for instance, can go so far as to push the envelope of sexuality, while still remaining balanced on the other side of “Smut“.  But as of late, I have been reconsidering.

In my late teens, I became interested in the psychology of serial killers.  My interest led me to the works of FBI profiler John Douglas.  What he found was that a great deal of motive behind most serial killers, was sexually instigated.  Even murders which did not include sexual assault, were stemmed from deep rooted sexual fantasies of power and domination over other human beings.  I am starting to believe that this may be the case for more of us than just killers.  Maybe not through power and domination, but I believe people’s desires to greatness and recognition in life is inspired at it’s core, in sexual desire.

I have always said  “a teenage boy picks up a guitar to become a rock star,  in hopes of getting girls.”  This is not to say he doesn’t love music, or has a natural gift for music, I am just “theorizing” that behind many of our incentives ( maybe just subconsciously) sex is the driving force.  Much as a male peacock attracts female mates by showing off their beautiful feathers, us humans seem to use success, fame, money, skill, etc…, to attract members of the opposite sex ( or same sex depending on our sexuality).

If life is motivated by sexuality, and art is a reflection of  life (meaning that art in turn, is a reflection of sexuality) then can it be said that pornography is the purest form of ” Visual” art (with Sex itself the greatest form of “Art”).  Pornography, although often consisting of some lame story line, cuts through all the social taboos,(bullshit in other words) and gets right to the sexuality, and possibly right to the inception of art.  Adult film stars are performers after all, and if you believe art is a mirror of life, well porn is mirroring life’s greatest ecstasy, emotion, passion.  Whether you like it or not,  could Porn be the highest form of Visual Art?
